There are five types of registration for veterinarians whose primary place of residence is NSW.  Under National Recognition of Veterinary Registration (NRVR) veterinarians who reside in other Australian states and territories and are also registered there have deemed registration in NSW.  Veterinarians from other Australian states and territories should register in NSW within 3 months of moving to NSW.

The Board may place conditions on the registration of a veterinarian limiting that veterinarian’s practice.

Full registration

  • A person who holds the necessary qualifications in veterinary science and whose principal place of residence is NSW may be granted Full Registration.
  • Applicants who studied overseas should check whether the applicant for full registration is required to pass the National Veterinary Exam (NVE).  
  • Under National Recognition of Veterinary Registration (NRVR) a veterinarian registered in another Australian state or territory has Deemed Registration and is able to practise as a veterinarian in NSW
  • A veterinarian registered in another Australian state or territory who moves to NSW must register in NSW once his or her primary place of residence is in NSW
  • Please ensure any copies of necessary documents submitted to the Board with an Application for Full Registration are certified by an authorised witness
  • Please note that application payments cannot be made online
  • Please allow 7-10 days for applications to be processed
  • If you are granted Full Registration:        
    • You are given a registration number and you may start practising in NSW
    • Your Full Registration is published on our online Register
    • You will be sent a letter of acknowledgement
    • You will receive your Certificate of Registration after the next Board meeting
  • New graduates who have a copy of their degree or testamur and have not yet worked as a veterinarian do not need to submit a Letter of Professional Standing
  • If you are a graduand with the necessary qualifications in veterinary science (completed the requirements of the degree but do not yet have a copy of your degree or testamur) you should apply for Provisional Registration
  • Registered veterinarians must notify the Board of any change to their name, address or contact details within 14 days of the change 
 

Provisional registration

  • A graduand (person who has completed the requirements of the degree but does not yet have a copy of the degree or testamur) with the necessary qualifications in veterinary science should apply for Provisional Registration (using Form R01 Application for Full Registration)
  • Graduands do not need to submit a Letter of Professional Standing with their application
  • Provisional Registration may be granted for up to 3 months
  • The Board may grant Full Registration to a person with Provisional Registration once the Board receives a copy of the person’s degree or testamur certified by an authorised witness
  • Please ensure any copies of necessary documents submitted to the Board with an Application for Full Registration are certified by an authorised witness
  • Please note that application payments cannot be made online
  • Please allow 7-10 days for applications to be processed
  • If you are granted Provisional Registration:         
    • You are given a registration number and you may start practising in NSW
    • Your Provisional Registration is published on our online Register
    • You will be sent a letter of acknowledgement
    • You have 3 months to provide the Board with a certified copy of your degree or testamur
  • A person with Provisional Registration who is granted Full Registration will be sent a Certificate of Registration after the next Board meeting and their registration status will be updated on our online Register
  • The Board may cancel the registration of a person who has not submitted a certified copy of their degree or testamur to the Board within 3 of being granted Provisional Registration

Registered veterinarians must notify the Board of any change to their name, address or contact details within 14 days of the change 

Limited registration

  • A person with qualifications and experience in veterinary science who does not hold the necessary qualifications in veterinary science and whose principal place of residence is NSW may be granted Limited Registration
  • A person with Limited Registration must be supervised by a registered veterinarian (other than a veterinarian with Limited Registration) and the supervising veterinarian(s) must sign the Supervising Veterinarian Declaration form
  • Limited Registration may be granted by the Board to allow a person to practise veterinary science for a specific purpose or a limited time
  • A person who is preparing for the clinical component of the National Veterinary Exam may be granted Limited Registration to assist the person prepare for this exam
  • Please ensure any copies of necessary documents submitted to the Board with an Application for Limited Registration Form are certified by an authorised witness
  • Please note that application payments cannot be made online
  • Please ensure the Board receives your application at least 7 days before the next Board meeting
  • If you are granted Limited Registration, after the meeting of the Board:               
    • You are given a registration number and you may start practising under supervision in NSW
    • Your Limited Registration is published on our online Register
    • You will be sent a letter of acknowledgement with a Certificate of Limited Registration

Registered veterinarians must notify the Board of any change to their name, address or contact details within 14 days of the change 

Specialist registration

  • A person who has Full Registration or who is eligible for Full Registration in NSW may be granted Specialist Registration in NSW by the Board
  • The AVBC provides a recommendation to the Board as to whether the person has qualifications in veterinary science and experience in the practice of veterinary science sufficient to justify the granting of Specialist Registration
  • A person registered as a veterinary specialist in another Australian state or territory may apply to be registered as a specialist in NSW by submitting an Application for Full Registration
  • Please note that application payments cannot be made online
  • Please note that an Application for Specialist Registration in NSW requires the payment of TWO fees:
    • An application fee must be paid to the Board
    • An application fee must be paid to the AVBC
  • Please allow at least 2-3 months for applications to be assessed by the AVBC
  • If you are granted Specialist Registration, after the meeting of the Board:            
    • You may start practising as a veterinary specialist in NSW
    • Your Specialist Registration is published on our online Register
    • You will be sent a letter of acknowledgement with a Certificate of Specialist Registration
  • Registered veterinarians must notify the Board of any change to their name, address or contact details within 14 days of the change 

 

Honorary registration

  • A person who has Full Registration or who is eligible for Full Registration in NSW may be granted Honorary Registration in NSW by the Board if the person:
    • Has been a member of the veterinary profession for not less than 40 years
    • Has been a member of the veterinary profession of long standing and is of or above the age of 65 years
    • The person’s standing in the profession is such to justify the granting of Honorary Registration
  • Honorary Registration is the same as Full Registration except no annual registration fee is required
  • A person with Honorary Registration in NSW who does not wish to practise veterinary science may submit an Non-Practising Conditions Declaration to enable on-going registration without the need to complete Continuing Professional Development requirements
  • If you are granted Honorary Registration, after the meeting of the Board:           
    • You will be sent a letter of acknowledgement
    • Your Honorary Registration will be published on our online Register
  • Registered veterinarians must notify the Board of any change to their name, address or contact details within 14 days of the change
